Classic Climbs Cycling Tour — Southern Spain

Our Classic Climbs Tour is a guided cycling holiday and training camp in Southern Spain, designed for riders who enjoy long climbs, quiet roads and warm-weather riding.

Based in Vélez de Benaudalla, just one hour from Malaga Airport, the tour offers easy access from across Europe while placing riders in some of the best climbing terrain in Spain. This is a climbing-focused cycling holiday built around long steady mountain efforts, spectacular scenery and a relaxed, supportive group atmosphere.

Many riders searching for a cycling holiday in Malaga discover that the best climbing is found a little further east on the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada, where quieter roads, longer climbs and more varied terrain create ideal training conditions.

Whether you are preparing for a major cycling sportive, building early-season fitness, or simply looking for an unforgettable week of riding, the Classic Climbs Tour delivers.

Why Southern Spain is Perfect for a Cycling Holiday

Many riders begin their search looking for a cycling holiday in Malaga. Just inland from the coast, Southern Spain offers quieter roads, longer climbs and more varied terrain, while still benefiting from the excellent flight access that Malaga provides.

From our base in Vélez de Benaudalla, riders have access to:

  • Long sustained mountain climbs

  • Quiet roads with very little traffic

  • Warm and sunny riding conditions

  • Coastal routes along the Costa Tropical

  • Challenging Sierra Nevada terrain

Compared to more crowded cycling destinations such as Mallorca or Girona, Southern Spain offers quieter roads, longer climbs and more consistent weather, particularly in early spring and autumn..

The Location

We are based in Vélez de Benaudalla, a quiet Andalusian village positioned between the mountains of the Sierra Nevada and the Costa Tropical, just over one hour from Malaga Airport. This makes the Classic Climbs Tour easily accessible from across Europe, with a wide choice of direct flights throughout the year.

While many riders begin their search looking for a cycling holiday in Malaga, our location offers the best of both worlds — easy access from Malaga Airport combined with quieter roads, longer climbs and more varied terrain than the immediate coastal areas.

The area is known for challenging mountain terrain and quiet roads, making it particularly well suited to riders training for sportives, mountain events or general early‑season fitness.

A Typical Week on the Classic Climbs Tour

A typical week on our Classic Climbs cycling holiday follows a simple rhythm, building gradually through the week before easing off towards the end.

The riding begins to step up, with longer climbs and more time in the saddle.

  • Thursday — Long Mountain Day
    5 hours • 90–120 km • 2,400 m climbing
Back into the mountains for another challenging and rewarding day of climbing.

  • Friday — Light to Medium Final Ride
    3–4 hours • 50–85 km • 1,500 m climbing
A final ride to round off the week, usually steady and social, with time for coffee stops and good conversation.

Good to know before your cycling holiday in Southern Spain

Level of fitness

To get the most out of this holiday, you should arrive with a solid base level of cycling fitness. Ideally, your regular long ride should be around 3 to 4 hours, or roughly 80 to 120km. The terrain is mountainous, so most days involve a fair amount of climbing and descending.

If you are used to weekend long rides and steady climbing, you should be in a good place to enjoy the week.

Non-cyclists are welcome

If you are travelling with a partner or friend who does not cycle, that is no problem. Evenings are free, so there is time to enjoy the village, the coast, local food and a bit of sunshine together. There is also a rest day in the week for shared time away from the bike.

Getting here

You can fly into Malaga, Almeria or Granada airports. Malaga is the most common choice for transfers. Airport transfers can be arranged, and we recommend confirming flight details before booking if you are relying on collection.

Bike hire

If you do not want to travel with your own bike, you can hire one from us. We have a selection of premium hire bikes available from BMC, and we can provide a free bike fit when you hire from CSN. All hire bikes must be pre-booked and are subject to availability.

Food and drink

Accommodation is self-catering, but there are bars and cafés in the village where you can get a Spanish-style breakfast. Lunch is usually taken on the road, and on longer days there may be more than one stop. In the evenings, guests often eat out together, though this is entirely flexible.

On-bike nutrition

Our store is fully equipped with nutrition products from Clif Bar and SIS.

Travel insurance

You must have your own personal medical and accident insurance for the full duration of your holiday. We also recommend bringing your EHIC card if you are travelling from another EU country.
