The Mobel Sport - Cycle Sierra Nevada Scholarship was developed as a way to sponsor young cyclists that may not have opportunity or financial capacity to avail of a cycling training camp. In this section we take 5 minutes for a quick chat with one of the applicants selected for the 2017 program.
Aaron Doherty - westport - ireland
Who are you?
My name is Aaron Doherty. I live in Westport, Ireland and I will be riding for nrpt next year as a 1st year junior
What team do you ride for?
I currently ride for Westport Covey wheelers but I will be joining up with The Nicholas Roche Performance Team in early 2017
Why did you start cycling?
When I was just 10 years older my brother was an under 16 and about to ride the 'Youth Tour of Ireland' because my mom was involved in running the event she informed me that I could race as in under 12. I borrowed a Giant defy from a friend down the road and after just one day of racing I was thrown into my first race at an international standard. From that day on I been hooked to my bike ever since.
Have you any sporting backgrounds apart from cycling?
Up until a couple of year ago I done a lot of running. Going all the way to the international schools cross country. Cycling was always number one though
What type of cyclist are you? Do you compete in other disciplines, other than road cycling?
At such a young age I don't think I'd a good idea to establish yourself as a certain type of cyclist, I'd rather leave the door open and try be good at all aspects of the sport. Due to the lack of ficilities in the west of Ireland I am only exposed to Road cycling but I would love to have a go on the track.
Favourite piece of cycling equipment/kit?
Shoes.
Your greatest achievements on a bicycle?
For sure my greatest achievement was this year doing the double in the national champs when I won both the TT and Road race

Most memorable moment/stage win from professional cycling?
2013 Tour of Flanders
Your favourite stage race and one day race? Why?
One day: Tour of Flanders. Jammed packed with action. Stage race: Tour de France. Brings out the biggest names in he world of cycling.

Tell us something we don’t know about you already and you don’t mind the general public knowing?
I can't cook. So I better learn on this trip before I go back to my mum!
Hopes and plans for the future?
My main goal for the upcoming season is to break the Junior National TT record over 10 mile.
