Cycling the Costa Tropical

THE PICTURE PERFECT COSTA

The Costa Tropical is the section of coast running along the Mediterranean through the province of Granada. It is home to some truly picture-perfect beaches as well as a great network of coastal roads and stunning climbs which are perfect for cycling in the sun-drenched south of Spain. Many say that the Costa Tropical is the best kept secret in the world of cycling holidays and cycling training camps; its low levels of tourism and high levels of authenticity make for: quiet roads, friendly locals and perfect days on your bike.

THE LOCATION

Nestled between the Costa del Sol and Costa Almeria, you’d be forgiven for dismissing the Costa Tropical as just another region of built up, tourist-crowded sea-side but that couldn’t be farther from the truth. The area has a relaxing, more traditional feel to it – even the popular towns of Almuñecar or Salobreña have a distinctly warmer vibe to them in comparison to the more well known towns such as Nerja in Malaga. Our Vélez de Benaudalla headquarters is a mere 20 minute cycle from the south coast of Spain and you have the option of cycling up and over a small climb and descending into the town or taking the equally scenic canyon road which is a flatter entry into the town - definitely the preferred route after a long and hard day in the saddle.

THE CLIMATE OF THE COSTA TROPICAL

One of the biggest draws for those looking for a winter cycling destination is the consistent, near year-round sunshine. The Costa Tropical is blessed with 320 odd days of sunshine a year making it the perfect base for those suffering from the winter blues! The average temperature for the area is 20ºC - ideal for cycling or lounging around by the beach with family and friends.  Cycle Sierra Nevada is a cycling training camp and vacation hotspot, however it is not only for cyclists; many family members, partners and friends who aren’t as enthusiastic about cycling but are just as enthusiastic about year-round sunshine can also book accommodation with us and soak up the local culture, coffee and ‘craic.’

THE CYCLING

The Costa Tropical is highly varied meaning there is something for everyone to enjoy – whether it’s a scenic run along the coast road or an escapade into the many challenging climbs on offer in the area. The roads are as smooth as they come and the drivers are usually extremely respectful towards cyclists – something that can’t be said for many places these days! The proximity to the nearby Alpujarras and Sierra Nevada mountain range means there is no shortage of routes and climbs to explore. Some of Spain’s toughest and most beautiful climbs are within easy riding distance and are worth coming to visit in their own right! Don’t take our word for it, but take the word of the Vuelta a España as they have featured many of our local climbs in previous years’ editions of the race.

ROADS DEVOID OF TRAFFIC

Despite all this, the area is still relatively undiscovered by the cycling masses. Perhaps this is a good thing for those willing to try something different, however, once into the hills, the roads are often devoid of traffic, setting the region apart from your typical cycling holiday destination which are becoming more and more overcrowded and commercialized.  Due to the great weather, cycling is far more common amongst people in towns and villages in our local area solely as an efficient and relaxing form of transport. We have found that because most of the locals are cyclists, they respect us more than anywhere else in the world and for this, we respect them. The Costa Tropical is living proof that there can be not only harmony but a positive relationship between all road users.

THE BEACHES

Whenever you’re not riding your bike (though it’s hard to get off it in such an area!) there are many sites well worth checking out. The castles of Salobrena and San Miguel for example are wonderful historic monuments harking back to the time of the Moors in the 10th century. If history isn’t your thing there are also numerous beaches and coves that look as if they’ve come straight out of a postcard – La Herradura. Callahonda, La Rijana and Almunecar jump out as some of the best.

THE PERFECT CYCLING DESTINATION?

The Costa Tropical has it all – sun, beaches, epic riding, nice people and a strong cultural identity. The area has so much to offer and explore; whether you’re an elite cyclist looking for a base for your big pre-season training camp or a complete novice looking to explore by bike. There is more than enough to keep you entertained and excited, and trust me, as soon as you leave you’ll be dying to come back!
