The Cycle Sierra Nevada Scholarship was developed as a way to sponsor young cyclists that may not have opportunity or financial capacity to avail of a cycling training camp. In this section we take 5 minutes for a chat with one of the applicants selected for the 2019 program.

I am a second year Junior/U18 cyclist from Ireland

I currently ride for Nicholas Roche Performance Team which is based in Ireland
Why did you start cycling?
My father used to cycle quite a bit and brought myself and my sister with him some times. We started off on track and that is where I got the interest in racing. Following on from that I took up road racing. In my 1st year on track I won 2 silver medals at the National championships and that is where the motivation came to be better and do more.
Have you any sporting backgrounds apart from cycling?
I was a competitive swimmer and have tried many other sports such running, football, tennis, basketball, cyclocross and Mountain biking. In the past couple of years I have just turned my focus to Road and Track cycling.
What type of cyclist are you? Do you compete in other disciplines, other than road cycling?
I am a road and track cyclist. I perform better on flat and fast courses but I believe I am competitive on mountainous terrain. On track I am more of an endurance rider , pursuit, scratch, & points despite being the Irish Junior National sprint champion I am no sprinter.
